Wanderlust, Warmth and World Domination!

It's so big...but so accessible. Trips me out on the daily...

Yes! Yes! Yes! That's how I feel now!!!! Headed up to NYC yesterday to meet up with Nina and start planning for World Domination! So exciting! It is such exciting stuff! Equally exciting is the fact that I am going to Mexico this MONDAY to lead a yoga retreat! Boom. Pow. Shazaam. A small, beautiful retreat in our Rancho Las Cruces location where I'll be teaching again in APRIL (over Easter). Heading to yoga now with a huge smile on my face! Life is amazing!

Pumpkin Carving 101

Hooray! I got to see and squeeze and laugh with my girlfriends today!! I feel like I've been running around lately, spreading myself thin. Today was no, a 3 hour qigong workshop and then carving pumpkins with the girls before my 7pm class, followed by dinner at my house. Add into that running errands and household chores. I'm so pumped that I finally got to catch up with Pammy, Adena and Erika (who is oh-so-pregnant and gonna have this baby boy any day now!!). We carved pumpkins by the fireside as we caught up on the intimate details of each-others lives. We laughed, bitched, and carved. Boom. Grateful for great friends!

Master Class + Heart Chakra

This Friday!! Journeying into the Heart Chakra with pranayama, asana and meditation. The class is three hours, all levels, and you must pre-register.

I've been thinking of my Dad a lot lately. I *always* think of him, but he's really been on my radar. Last night I was at my friends wedding and the father daughter dance always gets me a bit choked up, but I was strong and kept my shit together.

Mom posted this photo of him last week...she found it while visiting one of my dads sisters down in Maryland. Lately I've been thinking about what a MAN he was, and how many talents he had. So I love this photo of my "Renaissance Man" father, posing with his rottatiller (< forgive me I know I spelled this wrong).

Last winter a friend sent me this quote and told me that it made her think of my Dad--she just knew that he felt this way. I'd like to hope so....

Wedding Day.

Brian and I have been friends since the fourth grade. We surfed together, traveled together and have played music together for years. When we were 17 he started dating Kaitlin DeWald (she was only 14)....and now, ten years later, they are getting married!!! The celebrations already began on Thursday night, and let me tell you- it is a rowdy bunch! I'm actually going to be playing music during their ceremony. I am so looking forward to this beautiful celebration with all of our amazing friends!

Simple Satisfying Snacks.

I love fall foods!! Here are some of my latest, most favorite fall simple, satisfying snacks...

Sweet Potatoe or Yam
-Clean it, scrub it, dry it
-Poke it with a fork a few times
-Microwave for 4minutes
-Slice open, drizzle with GHEE (no, not butter- ghee. Buy some at your local health food store. Not only is it delicious, but it has healing properties and is much better for you than butter)
-Generous sprinkling of: salt and ground cumin (the more cumin the better)
-finish it off with a huge handful of fresh cilantro...using way more cilantro than you think would be necessary.
*Make sure that you eat the skin's the best part!

Swiss Chard
-in a skillet, caramelize (caramelizing is a slow process. It should take about 15/20minute on a med low heat) one large Vidalia onion
-to the caramelized onions add in lots and lots of chopped Swiss chard
Cook it down, adding in a small handful of chopped cilantro, salt, pepper and paprika

I have been roasting beets in their skins and then keeping them in the fridge, ready for when I need them.
To roast: wrap beets in tin foil and roast in oven on 325 for two hours.

Peel the beet and cut into bite-size pieces. Put in a bowl and toss with a pinch of salt and a pinch of cinnamon. Drizzle with olive oil and add the juice of one lemon. Toss with a small handful of chopped flat leaf parsley.

One of my besties in the whole wide world came for a short visit today, and I'm so grateful!! After delivering all three children to school, she drove down from Villanova to catch the last twenty minutes of my yoga class, followed by a few hours of lunching, chatting, and having some girl time. We took a long walk through a very quiet ocean city, enjoying the brisk fall breeze, the bright sunshine, beautiful clouds, and great company! So happy to see my girl!!

Moroccan Meal.

I had some friends over for dinner last night and made a proper Moroccan feast....including a roast chicken. Boom. So delicious. So grateful to share in all of life's abundance with good friends.

Advanced Sen Lines....

I have busted my ass these past three days...juggling work, life, friends, a little bit of sleep, and a lot of massage training! I did a Thai Massage Level III Advanced Sen Lines training, with special focus on the Ittha-Pingkhala Sen lines. Sen Lines are the Thai name for India's (Ayurveda) "Nadis" and Asia's (Chinese medicine/Taoism) "Meridians". As they say in Asia, "Same Same, But Different". Because I come from a yogic (Indian/Ayurvedic) background, it was a bit confusing, but it's all falling into place. Ittha/Pingkhala sen lines are same same but different from the Indian Nadis Ida and Pingala. Though I learned about the Ten major Sen lines, I learned a 75-minute 'therapy' (flow) for just Ittha/Pingkhala. And it couldn't have come at a better time because THIS is the part of my body that is out of balance...

The ORGANS passed through are...
- nose
- sinus
- eye
- brain
- muscles of the neck, shoulder, back, buttocks, thigh
- lungs
- lower abdomen
- kidneys
- bladder
- colon, lg intestine

- headache
- stiff neck
- shoulder pain
- common cold
- cough
- nasal obstruction
- throat ache
- eye pain
- chill and fever
- abdominal pain
- intestinal diseases
- back pain
- diseases of the urinary tract
- dizziness
- knee pain

Energetically it relates to emotional issues that we hold from the past.

Well...what the fuckballs. I *literally* have had every single one of those ailments this week, and only in this past week! Also this week I have been crying throughout the days....feeling a deep, empty sadness. I don't think that I cry for my Dad, knowing that he's still in my heart, but I cry for the physical void that he's left (if that even makes sense...?). Anywho, fucked up week. I have felt very drained, very challenged and very sad. So to teach and live AND do this intense training was quite difficult for me. But, I put my head down and dove in- and I'm so grateful that I did. I love my teacher, Rose Griscom, and I'm so happy to now have a better understanding of how to heal (myself and) others. I'm fascinated by body/mind/energy connection of it all, and so excited for all of the doors that this knowledge opens up!

Full Day, Long Night

After what felt like the LONGEST DAY EVER I headed to my friend Samantha's for her birthday dinner, and then to the Dead Dog to play some music. As exhausted as I am now I'm so grateful for my time this evening that I had to connect with good friends. Lately if people don't make it to the studio then I don't see it was nice to see people and not be in yoga clothes!

I saw the sun rise this morning and then joined my good friend Monk for a super fun surf session at "our spot". It was breaking perfect...lining up so that the wave ended at the jetty and then it was an effortless paddle-out - I felt like I was on a Merry-Go-Round. It was awesome! Then I jetted to the studio, taught a kick ass class against the wall, and then sped off straight to my Sen Lines training. It was a long day of studying hard, but when class was over at 5:30pm I hauled ass to the beach to catch the last bit of this swell. The sunset was the most beautiful one ive ever seen in New Jersey, and simultaneously the moon was rising in the east. It was of those moments that a camera is unnecessary because the image will forever be etched in the mind. So there I was...sliding waves under the bright pink full moon. Another beautiful day.

Stay Weird.

Soup and some Sassy ladies...

After class last night I had two of my girlfriends over for some soup [and steamed broccoli]. I had made the soup the day before, and as always, it was more delicious the following day.

One small head of cauliflower, chopped
One green apple, quartered
One med size Vidalia onion, quartered
2 cups vegetable broth
One cup coconut cream (unsweetened)-- you can get this at trader joes
Salt, cayenne, cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, turmeric and curry powder

Roast cauliflower, apple and onion in vegetable broth and seasonings on 300 for about an hour or until super tender. VitaMix/blend/purée and then transfer to a pot, adding in the coconut cream and allow to simmer for an hour. Season to taste (I go heavy on the curry powder and light on the cinnamon and nutmeg). Top with cilantro and pepitas and enjoy with friends!

Shatkarmas and Snot Rockets

Yesterday I taught my TT's about the Shatkarmas, or "Six Actions", which are kriyas designed to cleanse and purify the body. My favorite one to teach is how to use the (jala) Neti pot. We were laughing all afternoon, and the best were the lessons "bloopers". I wish that I had been filming....

Those shatkarma which effect purification of the body are secret. They have manifold, wondrous results and are held in high esteem by eminent yogis.
(Hatha Yoga Pradipika 2:23)

1. Neti: nasal cleaning, including jala neti and sutra neti.

2. Dhauti: cleansing of the digestive tract.

3. Nauli: abdominal massage.

4. Basti: colon cleaning.

5. Kapalbhati: purification and vitalisation of the frontal lobes.

6. Trataka: blinkless gazing.

Rainy Day Red Bean Chili

-1 16oz bag of Pinto Beans (red beans)
-Fresh Herbs: sage, rosemary, thyme, parsley (or cilantro)
-1 Onion (vidalia)
-2 Bell Peppers (red, yellow, orange or green), chopped into big chunks
-Garlic (the more the merrier!)
-1 jalapeño (optional)
-2 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
-10 Roma tomatoes
-olive oil
-salt, pepper, cayenne, chili powder, cinnamon, cumin seeds, ground cumin

This recipe is my interpretation of one I came across by Jaime Oliver. He used canned beans and canned tomatoes for his, which if you're crunched for time then it's fine- but if you're going to do it, do it's always better from scratch. Plus, it saves money and has better flavor ;) I was putzing around the house when it was pouring rain yesterday, so I did this recipe in pieces as I chipped away at my list of chores, and that's how I'll write it out...

*Beans: (or sub canned beans)
-Soak your beans overnight in water.
-Drain, rinse.
-Put in a pot, cover with water until the water is a few inches higher than the beans.
-A generous scoop of salt.
-Fresh thyme, rosemary, and sage.
-Bring to a boil. Cover. Cook til tender.
(Add more water if necessary)

Remove herbs. Drain
Set aside.

*Tomatoes: (or sub canned tomatoes)
-Cut tomatoes into quarters.
-Toss into skillet on med-low heat with a drizzle of olive oil.
-Season with salt and ground cumin. Be generous with the cumin, it's so delicious!
-Allow them to cook down and give them a good smashing and smooshing with your wooden spoon every now and again.

Both the tomatoes and the beans are great because once you start them you can just walk away and go about your putzing. I let the tomatoes simmer for nearly an hour, and the same with the beans. Easy peezy. You can even make these a day in advance if you want and just have them on stand-by.

*In your soup pot:
-generous drizzle of olive oil
-chopped onion, bell peppers and garlic (I like hearty, rustic I chop the produce pretty big. If you want to you can dice it super small and bite size. Crests choice).
--add beans and tomatoes....then add water until it's a few inches above the chili

*In the oven:
- preheat to 400
- add peeled, diced sweet potatoes into a roasting pan
- drizzle with evoo
- season the shit outta them. You want to make them little bites of flavor. Lots of chili powder, garlic, salt, pepper, cayenne and CINNAMON.
- roast until tender

Add sweet potatoes into your soup pot of chili. You'll probably have to add more water to the pot at this point, again making sure that everything in the pot is covered with water. Season again- salt, cayenne, cumin, chili powder, cinnamon.

-More fat? Add olive oil or a few scoops of ghee.
-More spice? Add in a jalapeño or more cayenne.
-Thicker? Scoop out a cup or two of the chili and purée in a blender or food processor and then add back to the soup pot.

If you want this more tex-mex, top with chopped cilantro, sour cream, and guacamole or sliced avocado. More traditional? Top with chopped flat leaf parsley.

It's soooooo freaking good, enjoy!

Rainy Day Healing.

I woke up at 5:30am, ready to conquer my VERY long 'to do' list. I rose, washed my face, brushed my teeth, neti'd, and then sat for pranayama and meditation. Okay- ready to kick ass and power through my list. First thing up: clean my room. The first thing that I went to tidy were my books. Now you should know- I hoard books. I love them. I wish that I could read all day long without getting tired eyes or having other obligations to tend to. Amazon and I are the best of friends, and 'he' sends me packages once a week...filled with books about spirituality, breathing, asana, and also bottles of Woodstock Almond Butter. Anywho, I order books that I know I won't have time to read, but I take comfort knowing that they are on my shelf-- ready for when I need them. Because that's the relationship that I have with books- they are there in the background, just ready and waiting- and when my mind is ready for them they jump out, demanding to be devoured. And so it was this morning with Blue Truth by David Deida. This book was recommended to me by one of my teachers during a Tantra training in India. Today was the day for it to be opened. Perhaps if I had opened it another day I would have put it down, gotten bored with it, or set it aside. But this morning as I sat on the floor and opened it up for a glance I simply couldn't put it down. I was frantically underlining nearly every sentence in the book, scribbling notes alongside, and marking my favorite lines with asterisks and hearts. I was crying, laughing, reading and re-reading. Needless to say, I didn't clean my room. But fuck it, it's MY room and I certainly don't mind the mess. Plus, I can always clean it tomorrow. Really though, noting on the list got done. I needed some time on my mat to digest all of the mornings reading. I was thankful that Stephanie Pazzaglia was teaching at our OC Zen Den. She's one of the new teachers and I dig her. Her classes are only an hour, they are straight and to the point without any fancy bells or whistles. She doesn't talk too much with the exception of some verbal cues and a reading at the end after savasana. I have taken her class a few times now and I love it because it allows me to get into MY body and have MY practice. Sometimes ill add a whole flow into one pose that she's instructed us into. I get to play with how MY body feels at that moment. The whole practice I do with my eyes closed and I so so enjoy the journey that I end up taking into myself.

I got home from class and figured that I've blown off my list thus far, why stop now? So I putzed in the kitchen, prepping and preparing food for whomever might walk through my door and need nourishing. In walks Lisa Mott. I'm not sure where to begin with Lisa, but she's a goddamn gift from above. Her knowledge of the physical body is endless. Add into that all of the understanding that she possesses of the emotional body and you have yourself a five star healer. Seriously though, I'm moved to tears when I think about how lucky I am to have come across her. She's not someone you go to for a measly massage to feel better or just feel go to her to be *healed*, on both a physical and emotional level. We began working together because I had pain in my knee. After a "consultation" with her it turns out that my knee pain is caused by and reinforced by a weak core. Go figure! Also, my stance throws off nearly every limb in my body, and my shoulder pain is actually cause by a combination of deep seated grief and pain in the upper back (which she fixed through working on my armpit and side body). She is teaching me how to heal myself through rolling out [on foam rollers and balls], and she very patiently explains to me HOW and WHY this and that hurt, and best of all- how to fix it. True healing is a process, not a one stop shop. After years of visiting chiropractors, orthopedic doctors and holistic gurus...I'm grateful for Lisa.

If you have an ailment, ache, pain, or anything causing you discomfort- I would happily pass along Lisa's information. I feel like I want to sing and dance on the rooftop after my afternoon session with her. So grateful for her wisdom and full power healing hands and mind.

Fall Food....

It's freezing out!!! And the crisp weather of fall makes me crave warm fall foods. I was inspired by some of the flavors that I had been introduced to while in Italy, so I decided that the chilly weather was grounds for some experimentation in the kitchen! I made roasted red skin potatoes with fennel seeds and rosemary, faro with roasted veggies and white beans. All the dishes were a hit with my dinner guests and they offered up flavors that warm you to the bone. But the highlight of the night wasn't necessarily the was the breathtakingly beautiful sky as the sun was setting. Mother Nature is truly the greatest artist....

Roasted (Red Skin) Potatoes with Fennel + Rosemary:
6 medium red skin potatoes cooked (in microwave) and sliced (into wedges)
Fennel seeds
Fresh rosemary
Olive oil (good quality!!!!!)
Roasted in the oven on 350 for an hour or until crisp.

Faro with Roasted Veggies:
3 cups faro (I cheated and used Trader Joes 10min Faro)
To the faro, I added diced, roasted....
-red pepper
-red onion
-fennel (not the bulb, but the stalks)
Season with salt, pepper, garlic and fennel fronds
Drizzle with generous amount of olive oil
Juice of one juicy lemon

Umbria-Inspired White Beans
16 oz bag of white beans (cannelini) soaked overnight
In a soup pot, sauté diced
-red pepper
-red onion
And then add in soaked, drained white beans
Cover with water
Add tablespoon of salt, fresh sage, fresh rosemary, fresh thyme,
Bring to a boil and cook until tender
*add crushed red pepper to taste
Garnish with flat leaf parsley
