Traveling Girl.

My friend Xocitl and I met in India. We went white water rafting down the Ganges, studied Palmistry together, and shared many a meal. She is a goddess. Yesterday she shared this blog entry with me about 'loving a traveling woman', and it brought me to tears. Traveling is my passion, but I also attribute this passion to being single. Shawn had straight up said to me before we were over that he'd already seen Asia, and didn't want to travel, but wanted a family. I have been told by another that I'm not domesticated and he couldn't date me because he wasn't sure when I'd just up and leave. This blog really empowered by hurt ego when it comes to being single, so thanks to Aleah Taboclaon for sharing...

By Aleah Taboclaon
"Date a girl who travels. Date a girl who would rather save up for out of town trips or day trips than buy new shoes or clothes. She may not look like a fashion plate, but behind that tanned and freckled face from all the days out in the sun, lies a mind than can take you places and an open heart that will take your for what you are, not for what you can be
Date a girl who travels. You'll recognize her by the backpack she always carries. She won't be carrying a dainty handbad, where will she put her travel journal, her pens and the LED flashlight that's always attached to her bag's zipper? In a small purse, how can she bring the small coil of travel string, the wet tissues, the box of cracker, and the bottle of water she's always ready with, just in case something happens and she can't go home yet.
Yes, a girl who travels knows that anytime, anything can happen and she just has to be prepared with it. Nothing takes her by surprise, she takes everything with equanimity, knowing that such things are always a part of life. She's reliable and dependable, traits that she's learned while on the road.
You'll also recognize a girl who travels by the fact that she's always amazed at the world around her, no matter if she's in her hometown or in a place that's totally new. She sees beauty all around her, not just the ones featured in travel guides or shown in postcards. A girl who travels has developed a deeper appreciation for life. She won't judge you, or pressure you to do things you don't want to do. She knows too much about the importance of identity and self-efficacy, and she will appreciate all the more if you won't pretend to be who you're not.
sunrise at warwick Date A Girl Who TravelsYou can make mistakes with a girl who travels, and you can also be as idiosyncratic as you can be. Trust me, she has seen so much worse in her travels, and knows firsthand the vagaries of human nature.
Date a girl who travels, because when you're with her, you'll realize that even though she's napped at a temple in Angkor Wat, went boating down the Mekong Delta, ran by the streets of Saigon, or went skinny-dipping in the caves in the Philippines, she still retains that humility that is the mark of a real traveler. She knows she's been to a lot of places, but she's humbled by the fact that the world is still a big places and she's only seen a small part of it. Seeing this in her can make you feel all right with yourself too; there's no need for you to do more, to be more. What you are is enough.
When you meet a girl who travels, ask her where she's been and what she's going to do next. She will appreciate your interest, and if you're lucky, she may even invite you to join her. When she does, do. Nothing bonds people better than traveling. On your trip, you will both see each other's best and worst characteristics, and you can then decide whether she's worth fighting for.
It's easy enough to date a girl who travels. She won't want expensive gifts, you can buy her (or both of you) cheap ticket to Thailand for the weekend, and she'll be more than happy to take you to the longest wooden bridge in the country. You don't even have to go overseas, you can take her out on day trips, caving or hiking, or treat her to a full body massage.
You can also buy her the little things that she keeps forgetting to buy for herself; that carbine that will attach her backpack to her seat so that she will feel easier about sleeping on her bus trip, or a backpack cover, a small alarm clock, a money belt, or many another sarong that will replace the one she lost in China.
She won't mind if you get lost on your way to a date. She knows that often times, the journey is more important than the destination. She will help you see the lighter side of things. She'll walk along with you, not behind you, pointing out the interesting bits of things you'll see on the way. Before long, you'll realize that yes, the journey has been more memorable than the destination that you've planned to take her to.
Is a girl who travels worth it? Yes, she is. So when you find her, keep her. Don't lose her with your insecurities and doubts. Because when she says she loves you, she really does. After all, she's seen so many things, met so many people, and if she has chosen you, better grab that opportunity and thank the gods that you were lucky enough she's chosen you and not that bloke she met while watching the sunrise in Angkor Wat, or while whitewater rafting in the Padas Gorge in Sabah.
If she says she loves you, she must have seen something in you, something that can always call her back from her travels, something that can anchor her to the world in the way that she wants to after weeks and months of being on the road.
Date a girl who travels. Make her feel safe, warm and secure. Make her believe that no matter where she goes, and however long she's gone, you'll always be there for her, the one that she can call home.
Find a girl who travels. Date her, love her. and marry her, and your world will never be the same again."

Beautiful Teachers, Beautiful Day

Bryna and Me @ Ana Forrests class.
I love Vermont
Acro Amazingness.
Me and My Dance Partner
My morning started with Ana Forrest, and my afternoon ended with Kia Miller. Really..need I say more?! Two of the most amazing teachers, in the most amazing location, in the same day. Boom. There was some freebies and sunshine in between, a green smoothie, some sunshine and hot tea. The night ended with an epic acro-yoga performance and a dance party dj'd by the fantastic DJ Drez. I'm laying in bed now and you couldn't wipe this smile off my face if you tried!

Free and Fun in the Vermont Sun.

This festival is top notch. Vermont is top notch. And the stuff that they are giving away is top notch. Unfortunately I can't eat 98% of what they are giving away (although its dairy free, gluten free, superandioxidant- almost everything has cane sugar or something along those lines which means I can't have it). BUT, today two men were giving away FREE HAIKUS, and that's something that I *can* have. The guy asked me for a topic and all that I could think of was zucchinis, so that's what I gave him...

Vermont! Vermont!

Sweet Vermont! Ah! It's amazing. I didn't think that I'd need a vacation so quickly after getting back from my winter abroad, but I have been a bit overwhelmed with my schedule, the teacher training, and the emotions of being home. So- yay vacation! Yay for me! I headed up with my yogis Bryna, Jaime and Ari. Jaime drove, Bryna was shot gun, and ari and I sat in the back ironing out the final details for our upcoming teacher training. It was great to have some uninterrupted time to really get shit done. We made it up here in record time, from margate to Stratton in less than 6 hours! Ari found us the most amazing, luxurious condo right at the base of the mountain- and yay for us, there is a huge amazing kitchen. We grabbed some provisions and then I threw together a vegan, vegetarian, Paleo, candida friendly and totally delicious soup.

1 large head caulifower
1 green apple
1 red onion (medium)
1 box vegetable broth
Garlic powder
Curry powder
Cilantro
Salt
Drizzle with some EVOO

Bring it to a boil in a pot and then purée in a vitamix or food processor. Enjoy.

I realize that the dawn

I realize that the dawn
when we'll meet again
will never break,

so I give it up,
little by little, this love.

But something in me laughs
as I say this, someone

shaking his head and chuckling
softly, Hardly, hardly

(Candida) Coconut Cream of Broccoli

This soup is freaking delicious...but it didn't start out like that, that's for sure! I love soup, and I've been experimenting with some candida friendly recipes. I'm trying to figure out Almond/Coconut milk, and thought that a broccoli combo could be good. In retrospect I think it would work best with cauliflower but this soup is bowl-licking good, so I'm happy. I served it to my friends tonight and they agree...so give it a go!

Steam broccoli
Drain
Add one bunch of scallions
Salt and pepper (lots of cracked black pepper)
1 cup chicken stock (I used some of my homemade stock!! Yay! So easy and totally delicious!)
1 cup almond/coconut milk
Bring to a boil then simmer
Purée
Season with:
One handful cilantro, chopped
2 tablespoons crushed cumin seeds
Juice of one small lemon
*cayenne and salt to taste
Garnish with sliced scallions

This soup is Vegan, Vegetarian, Candida and Paleo friendly!

**THIS SOUP TASTES BEST WHEN EATEN THE DAY AFTER ITS MADE!

Fathers Day

dad and me
Well I made it through Fathers Day without crying. My throat my tight and my heart was heavy, but every time that I thought about him I couldn't help but to smile. I found it difficult to fit any sadness into my heart when it was already filled with so many great memories and so much love. When I was looking through pictures I got a bit choked up on photos from the years right before he got sick...the ones from my childhood seem so long ago and the most recent when he's so sick are what I most remember right now--- but it's the photos of when he was healthy, when I was between the ages of 14 and 22 that really got to me. Goddamn, he was fun! The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying has truly given me peace of mind...I'm not sure how well I'd be handling this all without it. So Dad, I love you- and I miss your physical presence, but I still feel you in my heart. Happy Fathers Day.

Everything she sees
she says she wants.
Everything she wants
I see she gets.

That's my daughter in the water
everything she owns I bought her
Everything she owns.
That's my daughter in the water,
everything she knows I taught her.
Everything she knows.

Everything I say
she takes to heart.
Everything she takes
she takes apart.

That's my daughter in the water
every time she fell I caught her.
Every time she fell.
That's my daughter in the water,
I lost every time I fought her.
Yea, I lost every time.

Every time she blinks
she strikes somebody blind.
Everything she thinks
blows her tiny mind.
That's my daughter in the water,
who'd have ever thought her?
Who'd have ever thought?
That's my daughter in the water,
I lost everytime I fought her
Yea, I lost every time.

41st Street

1st beach yoga of the season! I'm only doing Sunday mornings this summer. 41st street beach in OC, 7am.

Gayatri Mantra

Chanting is so very powerful, and the Gayatri is a mantra that I hold very close to my heart. From now on all of my classes will begin by chanting the Shanti Mantra, and my beach yoga classes will begin with the Gayatri Mantra. This is the most chanted mantra in all of India, with many variations concerning the interpretation- but all are in reverence of the light...

"Let us adore the supremacy of that divine sun, the god-head who illuminates all, who recreates all, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, whom we invoke to direct our understandings aright in our progress toward his holy seat."

"We meditate on the effulgent glory of the divine Light; may he inspire our understanding."

"We meditate on the adorable glory of the radiant sun; may he inspire our intelligence."

The Gayatri is meant to bring light into any darkness...and this is what I meditate on when chanting it. It seems the appropriate mantra to chant for beach yoga because the sun literally rises and illuminates as we move through our practice.

Aum Bhur Bhuva Svah
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Naha Prachodayat

On the absolute reality and its planes,
On that finest spiritual light,
We meditate, as remover of obstacles
That it may inspire and enlighten us.

Music + Margate

Me and My Girls @ my gig last night...Yesterdays Deck Bar.
A day at the beach with my friends....

Thai Massage Round II

I finished an additional 30 hours of Thai massage training, and now have added side position to my repertoire as well as a whole new collection of new moves for supine and prone. I really enjoyed my one on one sessions with Rose Griscom, and in our two weeks together she got to really know me- on the surface and what's going on beneath it. Some days I feel like a duck: chilling on the surface, and paddling like hell underneath. During my training I was physically ill (thanks detox!), completely exhausted (work work work), and very emotional (it's been a challenging transition coming home). I've tried to keep it together on the surface, but some of the energetic stuff we were doing brought out my true state of being. Rose ended our training with some beautiful qigong and a poem by Hafiz, which I've been using as my mantra lately:

"I wish I could show you
when you are lonely
or in the darkness
the astonishing light
Of your own being."
-Hafiz

Feasts with Friends and Food Restrictions

I have been sticking to my candida cleanse and have been super strict. I'm really proud of myself and despite the discomfort I'm in now (major detoxing going on...it gets worse before you get better), I am super excited for feeling 100% down the line. Ultimately every year that you've lived with Candida you'll need a month on the cleanse. So I'm looking at two years of this, which I'm okay with. I know my way around the kitchen so I can still keep it fun, interesting and tasty. Unfortunately my desire to stay vegetarian was proving near impossible considering the dietary restrictions of the cleanse combined with my superduper active lifestyle. Last night after yoga Ro and I cooked up a feast, Thai lettuce wraps and Thai summer squash soup. Both candida friendly and outstandingly delicious.

Thai Lettuce Wraps
-Shredded carrot (leave out if on candida...but let your friends enjoy it)
-Sliced scallions
-Diced cucumber
-Peanuts (again, not for candida, but for everyone else at the dinner table)

Sautéed ground meat (turkey or venison) in a skillet, seasoning with freshly ground ginger (2" piece) and garlic (1 clove). Salt and pepper, zest of one lime, some lime juice and a red chili pepper diced.

Wash your lettuce.

Wrap it all up in the lettuce and enjoy!! For non-Candida-cleansers you can use soy sauce, sriracha and whatever else youd like for an added kick!

Thai Summer Squash Soup

- 4 squash (2 green zucchini and 2 summer yellow zucchini), thinly diced
- 4 shallots, diced
- 4 cloves of garlic, diced
Sautee it all in a soup pot with coconut oil until its cooked about half way through. Then...

Add one can of (Thai Kitchen) Unsweetened Coconut Milk. Add one box of chicken stock (or vegetable stock if you want this to be vegan). Add three large spoonfuls of thai red curry paste (Thai Kitchen makes the best one and for people with Candida, it's the only one that's candida friendly). To the pot add a pinch of salt, a few generous shakes of ground cinnamon and a few shakes of curry powder. Bring to a boil and then let simmer. Right before serving add the juice of two limes. HOLY SHIT, best soup ever.

Spent the night at Ro's and woke up to this....love their house!
